As I’ve mentioned in other posts, I’m a big proponent of making a blog part of your marketing mix. Blogs are a critical component to developing a good organic search strategy.  When you provide great content and promote them consistently, blog posts can drive traffic to your site and help push your URL to the top of search engine rankings.

The process of starting a blog can be a bit daunting. When I mention blogging to clients, I get a lot of questions, including:

  • What technology platform should I use?
  • How should a blog integrate with my main website?
  • Who’s going to manage the blog?
  • Where will we get content?
  • How do we promote our blog?

It seems that in most people’s minds, content is the single biggest hurdle.  Here’s a great post from Lee Oden for TopRank, an online marketing blog.  This post addresses content, where to find it, and how to leverage it.  Well worth the read!

Does social media strategy need to come before tactics?  Great question posed in a recent post by Lee Oden on the Online Marketing Blog.  To simplify the debate, let’s assume that the definition of “strategy” is planning, and the definition of “tactics” is doing or executing.  Lee asked this question of several social media luminaries and as you might have guessed, most said strategy was extremely important and should come before tactics.

The lone dissenter was Guy Kawasaki, one of the original Apple employees responsible for launching the Mac in 1984.  He’s currently managing a venture capital company, a successful blogger, and author of nine books on business start-ups.  His advice – focus on tactics:
